Extreme Heat Expected Through Much of the State |
From our Safety Consultant Alba Vasquez, Compliance Solutions, LLC. As you are all aware, California is currently experiencing extreme heat conditions. This is a critical time to double down on heat illness prevention measures to keep your workers safe and in compliance with Cal/OSHA. Please review the plant we wrote together and implement the following immediately: Start Each Day with a Safety Meeting (required when temperatures are above 95 degrees – High heat procedures) Meet with your crews before work begins to remind them about drinking water and taking rest breaks. Reinforce that rest should happen before symptoms appear. Provide Adequate Water – Replenish Frequently Cal/OSHA requires that more than 2 gallons of water (free of cost) per worker be made available during an 8-hour shift when temperatures exceed 95°F. Don’t fall into the trap of allowing workers to go buy their own water when supplies run out. Employers are responsible for providing it. Water must be replenished throughout the day and kept close to the work area. Rest and Recovery Remind workers to rest often, even if they feel fine. Provide shaded or cooled areas where workers can recover safely. Emergency Response Have a plan in place to respond immediately if someone shows signs of heat illness.Never leave a worker alone who is experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, heavy sweating, or nausea. Drill your workers on what to do if someone becomes overcome by the heat. Please take these precautions seriously and make sure your crews are reminded every day until this heatwave passes.
