| Are Your Job Descriptions Still Doing Their Job? Job descriptions are often created when a position is first filled, but they don’t always keep pace as responsibilities change over time. Employees may take on new projects, adopt different technologies, supervise additional staff, or shift priorities as the business grows. Reviewing job descriptions at least once a year helps ensure they accurately reflect the essential functions of each role, set clear performance expectations, and provide consistency during recruiting, onboarding, and performance evaluations. For California employers, accurate job descriptions also serve an important compliance purpose. They can help support employee classifications, assist with the interactive process when an employee requests a reasonable accommodation, and provide documentation when making employment decisions. While a job description alone doesn’t determine compliance, keeping it current is considered a best practice and can help reduce misunderstandings and potential risk. A simple annual review—especially when paired with manager input—can go a long way. Consider asking supervisors whether the position’s primary duties have changed, whether new skills or certifications are now required, and whether the physical or scheduling requirements remain accurate. If your organization hasn’t reviewed its job descriptions recently, we urge you to take time to do this now!
