It looks like employees are finally taking the time off they’ve earned — and not quietly. “Loud vacationing” is the latest workplace trend, with people openly talking about their travel plans and actually using their PTO. It’s a welcome shift, but also a good reminder for employers to take a hard look at whether their PTO policies are helping or getting in the way. With so many workers still hesitant to fully disconnect, there’s work to do. Whether you’re thinking about unlimited PTO, a minimum time-off policy, or just cleaning up the one you have, the focus should be on making it clear, fair, and legally compliant. That means tracking usage, setting expectations, and training managers to be consistent. A policy that sounds great on paper can still fail if employees don’t feel like they can actually use it — or if it’s applied unevenly across teams. The real driver of a healthy PTO culture is leadership. When managers and execs are open about taking time off — and make space for their teams to do the same — it sets the tone. It tells employees: we want you to recharge, and it’s safe to do so. Summer’s a great time to revisit your policies and start building a workplace that encourages people to unplug without guilt.
